julie

Julie has been a Committee Member since January 2008. Her husband is a brain tumour sufferer who has had a low grade glioma for 8 years. She is interested in developing psychological support for brain tumour patients and their carers. She is particularly interested in the effects of brain tumours on memory and cognition. Julie is a part time GP in Edinburgh and has two children, aged 15 and 13.

katherine

Katherine’s husband’s experience made her eager to work towards a change in the health system. Her husband experienced symptoms of nausea, dizziness and a sense of not being aware of his surroundings. These occurred up to four times every day, starting in March 2003. His symptoms were dismissed by their GP, a private doctor and the Western General Outpatients (where one young doctor labeled him a time-waster). By October his condition had worsened and a scan revealed a cerebral glioblastoma. An operation followed but his condition did not improve. He died in June 2004. It was after this that Katherine joined BTA in an attempt to raise awareness about brain tumours and their misdiagnosis.

He also enjoys music and going to the cinema when he gets the chance.
